About
This research pilot, led in collaboration with Saxion University, aims to develop a science-based lab methodology to physically identify and quantify post-consumer recycled (POCR) cotton in denim fabrics—distinct from industrial textile waste. Today, verification is based solely on certification and self-assessment; this pilot addresses the need for a scientifically backed, standardized lab test. The goal is to create a test protocol that can be globally scaled through partnerships with accredited laboratories, aligning with EU regulations like the Digital Product Passport.
The lab test will be designed to:
- Detect the physical presence of POCR cotton
- Quantify the percentage of POCR in a fabric blend
- Validate certification claims with accurate, science-based data
- Be adopted as a new global norm for fibre verification
Pilot partners will include Saxion University Lab, one or two brands, a select number of denim mills, accredited labs, and the Dutch Norm Organisation. The project is currently looking for interested Denim Deal members to participate and co-develop this credible, transparent solution for the industry.
